Green Prescription Techniques to Grow Engagement

Who is it for? Anyone working with, or caring for, older persons and those living with dementia

Tutor: Joyce Fitzpatrick is a Social and Therapeutic Horticulturist specialising in tutoring, and delivering, nature based green care activities with a particular focus on working with those living with dementia and utilizing environmentally conscious methods.

Key Learning Outcomes – this hands-on 1 day workshop will cover:

  • What is meant by Green Prescribing and how it works

  • How nature therapy works within the five areas of impact: the physical, psychological, cognitive, social, and spiritual

  • Facilitating special requirements and responsive behaviours

  • Setting goals and using role-play to understand how others measure value and satisfaction from activity participation and how this knowledge can support autonomy and greater engagement

  • Basics of gardening: botany terminology, tools and adaptations, germination, selecting sensory enriching plants etc.

  • Health and safety considerations when working with nature

  • Understanding expectations as well as recording and measuring delivery outcomes
